God's Perfect Timing

I worked as an auditor for the United State Government on their contracts in Afghanistan (at the time), the second largest airfield in the world at Bagram.

It was October 2012; I just got off work – it was about 7:00 pm. I started walking back to my room. I always go on long walks after supper because there’s very little to do after work. They usually last two hours. This particular evening was cold, so I went back to my room to get my jacket. 

As I was heading out the door my eyes caught a book lying on top of my dresser by the door. It was a book my mother had sent me called Psalm 91. She knew I was going through some hard times being away from my family. And she also knew of the danger here as it often got attacked on a monthly basis with rockets shot seven miles away by the Taliban. 

For some reason that night (I’d had the book for quite a while) I picked up the Psalm 91 book and turned it over and read the back cover before I left the room for my nightly walk. By reading the back page it delayed my walk by about thirty seconds. After reading it, I remembered saying a prayer that the Lord would protect me and give me a long life and keep me safe in this war zone. 

So, I left my room all ready for my walk and headed down Disney Ave—the main drag. It was named after an Army Private who lost his life a few years earlier in Afghanistan. In about five minutes into my walk, I heard that old familiar siren go off indicating the Taliban was shooting rockets at us again which happens about three times a month. My heart started racing and I started running but I was running straight towards where the bomb would land. It exploded and shook the ground. It was loud. It made my ears ring. The smoke rose up about one hundred yards. It was so close to where I was. Then I started running the other direction – believing there would be two more rockets coming. But that night they only shot one. 

When I got to my room, I sat on the bed and thanked the Lord that I was not killed. The next morning, I walked to work on the same path and timed the seconds—it was exactly thirty seconds that I was delayed because of reading and praying. That made the difference that kept me from Ground Zero. I thank the Lord for His promises in Psalm 91 and His love to protect me and save my life. 

I left Afghanistan two months later and often look back and remember God’s mercy, faithfulness, love and protection.
