I have been asked this question many times: “How do you know the difference between an area of flesh and demonic activity?” Sometimes it is hard to know whether one is contending with demons or dealing with flesh. Let me give you this illustration. Have you ever been driving on a country road and noticed a dead animal lying in the ditch? After a few days, what is attracted to that dead, rotting flesh? Vultures! The more rotten the flesh the more vultures are attracted. The same thing happens in the spiritual realm. Anytime we sow to the deeds of the flesh and get into sin we are going to reap corruption. That word corruption actually means dead, rotten flesh. There are vultures in the spiritual realm, and those spiritual vultures are evil spirits—demons! And just as physical vultures are attracted to physical, dead flesh, the spiritual vultures (demon spirits) are attracted to dead flesh in the spiritual realm. Demons are attracted to those thoughts and actions and attitudes that don’t line up with the Word of God. There is no way to keep demons away when a person indulges in the deeds of the flesh. That is why we can’t put up with thoughts such as: What can it hurt, just this once? It does harm because, if we let down once, we’ll do it again— and it gets easier each time. It is really not a question of whether it is flesh or demons. If you leave flesh there long enough, it becomes a feeding ground for demons. That’s why God tells us to get rid of our sinful flesh. Do not be deceived, God is not mocked…For the one who sows to his own flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap eternal life. Galatians 6:7–8 The things we do in the flesh that we consider harmless are never as harmless as they appear. When we start doing things independently of God and exalting our will above the Word of God, we will reap corruption. It is a spiritual law and it operates as surely as the law of gravity. By the same token, when the old flesh nature that has been crucified in Christ is left buried in Christ it will not attract demon spirits. -Peggy Joyce Ruth Get the Book!
