Last spring, my husband Keith and I took a weekend trip to San Antonio to visit family. While there we met with some friends we had not seen in a while. They told us about and showed us the Psalm 91 God’s Shield of Protection that they were leading weekly in their home. I made a note of it, and when we got home, I ordered the book.
I got approval to lead a Psalm 91 class at the Stiles Prison in Beaumont a few months later. My husband was the chaplain there from 2018 to 2020. During that time, I started teaching a course designed for men coming up for parole to prepare them to live in the free world again. I really felt that the Lord wanted me to present this Psalm 91 course at the prison. I had about 10 or 11 in the first class, and we started around the 1st of August. I had only had about three classes when my husband contracted covid. At first, we thought he had caught a cold from the children at school, where he is a 5th-grade substitute teacher. He did not go to the doctor until almost a week after his symptoms started. When he got tested, the P.A. prescribed an oral treatment and oxygen because he also had pneumonia. The next few days were awful as his health went downhill rapidly and he could barely walk or talk. I was afraid to go to sleep in case he got worse. After three days of this, I knew that it was more than I could handle at home. Of course, I had been praying the entire time, begging God to make him well. I had thoughts of if he didn’t get healed, how would I ever finish the Psalm 91 class with any sort of credibility. I called an ambulance and followed them to a local hospital. They would not let me see or talk to anyone and said they would call me. So I came home and started cleaning the house, thinking they would make him well. He laid in the hallway for five hours, and then they called and told me he had been discharged. My daughter and I went to pick him up, finding him in the same condition as when they took him in. Again, no one talked to me about his situation, only told me to stop his medication. I was frantic! The following morning I called his P.A., and he was livid. Finally, he asked if there was any way I could get him to a hospital in Houston. My daughter volunteered to drive us, so off we went. The staff there were all so kind and helpful. But again, no visitors. We stayed in a hotel, and one of the doctors called me every evening with updates on how he was doing and what they had done for him. He always assured me that he was going to see that my husband got well. I was still praying, begging actually, for God to heal him. A few days later, my daughter and I went to a park in Houston to take a walk and get some fresh air. While there, I called my husband’s room and spoke to him. There was a different doctor in there who wanted to talk to me. He was very confrontational and essentially told me that he didn’t know if he could help Keith or not. Well, that did it! The devil had made me mad, and I started declaring God’s healing promises and demanding that the enemy had to take his hands off! I later overheard my daughter, Lynnette, tell someone she thought I had cast out all of the devils in that park. When we got back to our room, I cried until I couldn’t cry anymore, but something had changed. I was no longer afraid. Determined that my husband would be well, I asked my daughter to look up healing scriptures as I wrote them down. I called Keith’s room and boldly declared those promises into his room. I contacted the prison and asked them all to pray. I knew then that God had heard our prayers and that He WOULD bring healing and strength to my husband. Three days later, we were able to bring Keith home. He was still very weak and had extreme brain fog, but God came through, and my husband has had no residual effects. He is as strong and healthy as he was before. At my next Psalm 91 class, I told them that I had to confess that I had been fearful and doubting, but that through it all, God not only answered my prayers, but He gave me a boldness I never had before. We just finished the first class two weeks ago, and five of the men signed up for the next class that begins next week. God IS our protection, our healer, our refuge and fortress, and He is our Father who loves us beyond anything we could ever imagine. PRAISE HIS HOLY NAME! -Lynda B.
