Walking Out of a Concentration Camp

Walking Out of a Concentration Camp

The question is—“How do we dwell in the security and shelter of the Most High?” It is more than an intellectual experience. It is a dwelling place where we can be physically protected if we run to Him. You may utterly believe that God is your refuge, you may give mental assent to it in your prayer time, you may teach Sunday school lessons on this concept of refuge, and you may even get a warm feeling every time you think of it, but unless you do something about it—unless you actually get up and run to the shelter—you will never experience it.

Corrie Ten Boom tells a story of a man who certainly acted on the protection of the Most High! An Englishman, in WWII, who was held in a German prison camp for a long period of time, came to know the Lord. One day he read Psalm 91. “Father in heaven,” he prayed, “I see all these men dying around me, one after the other. Will I also have to die here? I am still young and I very much want to work in Your kingdom here on earth.” He received this answer:

“Rely on what you have just read and go home!” Trusting in the Lord, he got up and walked into the corridor toward the gate. A guard called out, “Prisoner, where are you going?”

“I am under the protection of the Most High,” he replied. The guard came to attention and let him pass, for Adolf Hitler was known as “the Most High.” He came to the gate, where a group of guards stood. They commanded him to stop and asked where he was going. “I am under the protection of the Most High.” All the guards stood at attention as he walked out the gate.

The English officer made his way through the German countryside and eventually reached England, where he told how he had made his escape. He was the only one to come out of that prison alive.

With deepest respect for Ms. Ten Boom and for what she went through during the Second World War: this is a bullshit story.
− The English officer is anonymous.
− So is the German prison camp.
− Ms. Ten Boom did not mention the source of the story any time she published it.
− The survival percentage of western prisoners of war in German camps during the Second World War was far above 95%. For British PoWs the survival percentage was 96.5% – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner_of_war#World_War_II .
− Hitler was known as the Führer (“Leader”), not as the Allerhöchste (“Most High”). The German language has always, even during the nazi-regime, reserved the latter word to God alone, there was no mix-up. An indication that the story originates from someone who was a complete stranger to the German language.
− English PoWs are not known for having spoken German fluently.
− The guards did not ask for written evidence, like some written instruction or other document.
− What the English officer did was life dangerous. Nobody should be encouraged to risk his life in an outrageous way!!

The story is grist to the mill of those who consider Psalm 91 like a talisman (similar to the abuse of sūrah 113 and sūrah 114 in Islam). It is quoted by

There is a difference between trusting God and trusting a text about God as a talisman. The latter is superstition.

When we are dwelling in the shadow of the Almighty God, nothing is impossible. Some try to mentally determine if something is real, based on a worldly reasoning, but using such natural reasoning will never allow supernatural belief. Holy Spirit directed me to study Psalm 91 and purchase your Psalm 91 book. It took months of reading it, talking to the Lord about it, and declaring it’s protection, for it to get into my heart fully. It was as though a light switch was flipped inside me one evening and I told the Lord “Lord, I believe it!”. At that moment I felt His presence come over me and saw a vision of a bullet coming right at me and stopping in mid-air in front of me. About a month or so later I unknowingly brought a wasp nest into my home through the front door. It was inside a plastic plant. As I sat the plant down and was walking toward the door to shut it, I saw that God had stopping a wasp swarm at the threshold of my front door. I walked to the door and shut it as I felt His presence over me. Thinking the swarm had left, after several minutes, I took the plant outside, but the swarm was to my left and began coming toward me. Again, the Lord stopped the swarm.. It was about 18” from my face and it hovered there as I talked silently to the Lord, with no fear, only the peace of the Lord. His Word is truth.
